Analog hardware introduces subtle harmonic distortion, natural compression characteristics, and a three-dimensional depth that is difficult to replicate purely in software. Our Universal Audio preamps, SSL bus compressor, and tube equalizers add color and warmth that artists and listeners respond to emotionally.
When a vocal passes through our Neve 1073 preamp and LA-2A compressor, something magical happens — the signal gets smoother, rounder, and more present. These are not just nostalgic preferences; they are measurable harmonic additions that make audio more pleasing to the human ear.
The Digital Precision
Digital systems offer perfect recall, unlimited undo, and processing power that would have required rooms full of hardware just twenty years ago. Our Pro Tools HD system gives us sample-accurate editing, complex automation, and the ability to try creative ideas without destructive consequences.
Plug-in emulations have become remarkably good. Modern UAD and Plugin Alliance processors capture much of the analog character at a fraction of the cost. For many applications, the difference is negligible, and the workflow benefits are enormous.
Our Hybrid Approach
We track through analog preamps and record digitally. During mixing, we use a combination of hardware processing for key elements (vocals, drums, mix bus) and plugin processing for supporting elements. This gives us the analog character where it matters most while maintaining the flexibility and recall of a digital environment.
The best tool is the one that serves the song. We never use analog gear just for the sake of it, and we never shy away from plugins when they deliver the right result. The music always comes first.
